What is Trauma Informed Teaching?

Trauma informed teaching, also known as trauma responsive, trauma sensitive and trauma conscious teaching is a special approach to teaching. It is a philosophy where students are met with empathy and practices throughout the day that are implemented to help students dealing with trauma, although these practices also benefit all students.  Trauma informed teaching is not a specific curriculum but instead is a lens of understanding that teachers can use to inform their teaching practices and help incorporate coping strategies into the classroom. In summary it is how we teach content, not the content itself.
